Hong Kong is going to mark the 20th anniversary of its return to China on July 1.
NEWSPlus brings you a series of reports concerning the lives and careers of Hong Kong people here in Beijing.
A physiotherapist from Hong Kong, one of the first to specialize in sports rehab programs on the mainland, is considered one of the people who helped develop and expand the concept in China.
"My name is Bob Chen. My dream is quite simple; it is to help athletes recover from injuries. I was the first kinesiotherapist from Hong Kong that came to the mainland. I established a career as a sports rehabilitation expert in the mainland."
Bob Chen was once a water polo athlete from the Chinese mainland.
After moving to the US to study in 1985, he took on a role as a professor of sports rehabilitation at New York University.
When China won the bid for the 2008 Olympic Games, Bob Chen says he was convinced to return to China to help develop China's sports program for the Games.
"We did not have therapists back then. So a teacher at Hong Kong Polytech University asked me if I would help open a degree program there. They hoped I would come back, so I gave up NYU and returned to China."
Bob Chen moved to Hong Kong in 2001, becoming a permanent Hong Kong resident.
As an associate professor at Hong Kong Polytech University, he spent most of his time in Beijing helping the Chinese Olympic Committee prepare for the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
While in Hong Kong, Bob focused on helping establish a sports rehabilitation and injury prevention system for the Chinese Olympic Committee, in addition to introducing western ideas about sports health and rehabilitation.
Tian Qing (田卿)won gold in the women's doubles badminton event at the 2012 Olympics in London.
"Athletes had little chance to access physiotherapy techniques like this in the past, so injuries could often force them into retirement. Now, many feel confident most athletes can return to the physical shape they were in before the injury."
Bob Chen says he's grown to appreciate the life and work that Beijing has to offer.
"I would rate myself 8 or 9 out of 10 in terms of satisfaction of working in Beijing, especially the challenges here. In Beijing we have a variety of patients that create the most challenges. When an injury is bad, people from all over China come here to Beijing to seek treatment. We've even started getting athletes coming here from abroad, including from Europe, North America, Asia and other areas. The platform Beijing has given me is exciting, and very challenging."
Bob Chen has also written a series of books to help both fellow therapists and athletes.
He says helping people overcome injuries and other challenges will remain his lifetime goal.
